Stepan Levitsky vs. Frank Marshall

18th DSB Congress, Breslau - 1912

Stepan Levitsky was a national champion in Russia in 1911 and was also known for creating the dubious opening the Levitsky Attack and Frank Marshall was the US Champion in 1909 and was famously known for creating the theory behind the Marshall Gambit in the Ruy Lopez(Spanish Opening).
This game was played in Breslau (now Wrocław) on July 20, 1912, during the master's tournament of the DSB Congress. The game was also known as “American Beauty”.
According to legend, after Marshall's winning last move of the game, gold coins were tossed onto the board by spectators, although this is contested by other accounts since people were placing wager on the game. (Wikipedia)
